MP Keith Vaz has resigned as chair of the Home Affairs select committee after the Sunday Mirror published allegations that he had paid for the services of two male escorts. The newspaper alleges that the married father-of-two paid for the men to visit him one evening last month at a flat he owns in London. The paper also alleges that a discussion took place with them about using the party drug Poppers.
Mr Vaz had opposed government attempts to criminalise the drug, which are still legal in the UK.
Mr Vaz told the Mail on Sunday that he was stepping aside from the Home Affairs select committee, which he has chaired since 2007, and that he had referred the allegations to his solicitors. The Home Affairs select committee is currently undertaking a review of the UK’s prostitution laws.
