Inheritance tax
These notes apply to the UK
Under the 2005 Finance Act gay men and lesbians who become registered partners gain additional tax rights which prevent one partner having to sell off their house to pay inheritance tax when the other partner dies.
The limit at which inheritance tax is payable is raised in budget statements but in many parts of the country it would be below the value of the average house.
Couples should discuss this matter with their solicitor when purchasing property and drawing up their wills to protect each other.
